Pet deworming: dogs and cats

Both dogs and cats tend to host internal and external parasites. In addition to the discomfort they cause, parasites can lead to serious health problems, and can even be transmitted to humans. Pet deworming treatments should include a preventive component, which allows for quick detection of these types of problems.

In the case of puppies, deworming efforts should be exhaustive, because their immune system is not yet fully formed, and is therefore weaker.

Types of parasites in dogs and cats

We normally associate this pathology with ticks, however there are various types of parasites, both internal and external.

• Internal parasites: These are located inside the animal's body and usually take the form of worms. Vomiting, diarrhea, and obstructions are some of their consequences.
• External parasites: In addition to ticks, there are fleas and mosquitoes, which adhere to the skin causing dermatitis and diseases such as leishmaniasis.

Treatments against common parasites

The treatment actually depends on the characteristics of the animal, whether dog or cat, its size, and the stage it is in.

It is normal to administer an antiparasitic product quarterly during the year for internal parasites, while external parasites are usually treated especially in spring and summer, using monthly pipettes, sprays or collars that protect against ticks, fleas and leishmania mosquitoes.

It is important to find the product that offers the most protection and does not cause allergic reactions on their skin. Keep an eye on it.

Even if your dog is protected against external parasites, it is important to check their skin from time to time, as no product is infallible.

Prevention in puppies for dogs and cats

As we mentioned, the case of puppies is especially important, because their immune system is not yet formed. There are suitable products that have a less toxic formulation, and therefore are more respectful for their organism.

Do not forget regular visits to the vet, and if you detect any obvious signs such as bites, dermatitis or digestive problems, do not hesitate to go immediately.

In any case, if you are going to use products to treat a parasite problem, you should always take into account your vet's recommendations.
