Plans with dogs to enjoy with your pet

Why is it good to do activities with dogs?

Plans with dogs are not just a trend; they are a necessity for the physical and emotional well-being of our pets. Doing activities with dogs improves their health, prevents boredom and destructive behaviors, and strengthens the bond between you. Additionally, exercise and mental stimulation are crucial for keeping dogs happy and balanced. The diversity of activities to do with your dog also allows you to discover new hobbies and enjoy nature.

Activities to do with your dog in winter

When the cold weather arrives, it's not a time for hibernation; this season offers many opportunities to enjoy with your dog. Doing activities with your dog in winter can be a lot of fun and an excellent way to keep them active and happy. Here are some ideas:

City walks

City walks can be a great adventure for your dog. Exploring new neighborhoods, urban parks, and avenues allows your pet to experience new smells and sounds, which is very stimulating.

Park games

Even though winter can be cold, parks offer large spaces for your dog to run and play. Play fetch with a ball or a frisbee, or simply let them run and socialize with other dogs. These types of activities with dogs are ideal for keeping them active and happy.

Fun at home

On very cold days, the fun can move indoors:

Play intelligence or scent games, like hide-and-seek with treats. Hide their favorite treats around the house without them seeing you, then encourage them to find them using only their sense of smell. Try teaching them new tricks like giving paw, playing dead, or sitting or lying down.

These indoor activities to do with your dog are perfect for keeping their mind occupied and stimulating their intelligence.

Special snow training

If you live in an area with snow, take advantage of it for special training. Run and play in the snow, organize races, or build small obstacles. Snow can be a new and exciting terrain for your dog.

- Snow walks: Make sure your dog is adequately protected and warm, especially if they have short fur; sometimes, prolonged exposure to low temperatures can be dangerous for small and medium dogs. Use dog booties to protect their paws from the cold and street salt. We recommend that the duration of walks be appropriate for the outside cold.

- Playing in the snow: Play by throwing snowballs for your dog to chase. Let them run and explore the snow under your supervision. If it's their first time, take photos and videos; you'll love looking back at them again and again.

- Winter hiking: Choose safe and well-marked trails. Always carry water and keep your dog hydrated, even in cold weather.

- If you're going to dog parks, make sure the park is open and safe in winter conditions, that there are no ice patches, that the elements are safe, etc. Let your dog socialize and play with other dogs.

Tips to keep in mind

-Paw care: Check and clean your dog's paws after walking outside to remove salt and ice. If necessary, apply a paw balm, like Paw Care.

-Warmth at home: After the walk, ensure your dog has a warm and comfortable bed to recover body heat as quickly as possible.

-Avoid ice: Do not let your dog walk on icy surfaces to prevent injuries.

Summer plans with dogs

Summer is an ideal time to enjoy the outdoors with your pet. Here are some suggestions for summer plans with dogs:

Beach getaway

Nothing beats a beach getaway with your dog to enjoy the sun, sand, and water. Many beaches allow dogs and have specific areas for them. Dogs really enjoy discovering new smells, friends, sand, sun, waves... they love it! Make sure to bring fresh water and protect them from the sun with a dog shirt.

Here you have all the information about all the dog beaches in Spain, organized by areas. Choose the one you like best and enjoy!

Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and Basque Country, Catalonia and Valencia, Murcia and Andalusia, and finally the Canary and Balearic Islands.

Canicross

Canicross is an activity where you run alongside your dog, connected by a special leash. It's an excellent form of exercise for both you and your pet. It's ideal for dogs with a lot of energy who enjoy running. There are special dog leashes on the market for enjoying this activity with your pet.

Bikejoring

Similar to canicross, but in this activity you ride a bike while your dog runs ahead, pulling you. It's an exciting activity that requires good prior training, but it's very fun and energetic for both. This sport is recommended for medium and large-sized dogs. Be sure to buy a good pulling harness for this activity to avoid back injuries.

Dog hiking

Hiking is perfect for exploring nature with your dog. There are many routes and trails adapted for pets. Make sure to bring enough water, food, and a basic first-aid kit for any emergency.

Outdoor activities with dogs

Going to the beach, lake, swimming in rivers

Make sure the dog beach is enabled for it… Provide shade and fresh water for your dog. Always keep your dog supervised while in the water; under no circumstances leave them alone in the sea. Be very careful with currents and rocks. The same goes for a lake or small rivers, always near the shore and well supervised.

Hiking and walking

Choose shaded trails and walk early in the morning or at dusk to avoid the midday heat. Bring water for yourself and your dog, and take frequent breaks. Also, watch your dog's fur; if they have short hair, they might need a bit of sunscreen on their snout.

Games in the garden, terrace or patio

If you're lucky enough to have a garden or patio, set up a small pool or a hose; your dog will love it! Play fetch in the water, it's a great way for them to cool down without realizing it.

Visits to dog parks

Make sure there are shaded or wooded areas where your dog can rest. Bring water and a portable bowl.

Indoor activities

The same indoor games as in winter can work (see fun at home), but try changing traditional treats for ice cubes with frozen fresh fruit pieces; they will have a blast.

Safety Tips

- Constant hydration: Carry fresh water and a portable bowl so your dog can drink water at any time. Even if it seems like they aren't thirsty at first, they might want a drink.

- Sun protection: Although it may seem strange, dogs also need protection from the sun's rays. Use dog sunscreen on exposed skin areas, especially for short-haired and light-colored dogs. Provide shade and avoid prolonged sun exposure.

- Avoid hot asphalt: Make them walk on surfaces like grass or dirt to prevent burns on their paws. If the asphalt is hot for your hand, it's also hot for your dog's paws.

- Signs of Heatstroke: The signs of heatstroke in dogs are quite recognizable: excessive panting, weakness, vomiting, discomfort, drowsiness, lethargy.

If you suspect your dog may be suffering from heatstroke, take your dog to a cool place and contact your vet immediately.

Examples of specific outdoor activities with dogs

Picnic in the park: Enjoy a picnic in a dog-friendly park, bringing food and water. You can invite several friends with dogs to make the experience favorable for everyone.

Mountain excursions: Plan an excursion to a nearby mountain to enjoy cooler weather and beautiful views.

Camping: Spend a weekend camping in a dog-friendly location, making sure to bring everything necessary for your dog's comfort.

Useful Accessories

Today, there are many products on the market that will help keep your dog cool and hydrated, to prevent possible heatstroke. Here are some ideas:

Cooling vests: Vests designed to keep your dog cool during outdoor activities.

Cooling beds and blankets: Special beds and blankets that help keep your dog cool while resting.

Hydration packs and portable bottles and feeders: Products that make it easy to carry water so your dog is always hydrated anywhere.

With these ideas and precautions, you can ensure your dog enjoys the summer safely and fun.

What to do with your dog if they don't like or can't walk?

Not all dogs enjoy or can participate in intense physical activities. They might be senior dogs, have mobility problems, or have had a limb amputated. Here are some options:

Outdoor activities

Walks in parks or easy trails: Opt for flat surfaces and short trails. You can use one of our comfortable harnesses for small dogs to provide additional support. Keep the pace slow and watch for any signs of fatigue.

Gardens or enclosed areas: Play in the garden or enclosed areas where the terrain is known and safe. Avoid surfaces with many stairs or uneven terrain.

Visits to beaches, rivers, or lakes: Make sure the dog is comfortable in the water and supervise closely. Avoid strong currents and deep water.

Indoor activities

Mental stimulation games: Scent games, like hiding treats around the house. Puzzle toys for dogs that don't require much movement.

Obedience training and tricks: Work on basic commands and tricks that don't require much physical effort. Use positive reinforcement like treats and words of encouragement.

Aquatic therapy in a pool: If your dog has mobility issues, aquatic therapy can be an option. It helps keep their muscles active without the impact of other activities.

Massages and body care: Massage the areas around the amputated paw to relieve any tension. Make sure their nails are well-trimmed to prevent balance problems.

Car rides: Some dogs simply enjoy a car ride. Plan a scenic route and enjoy the landscape.

Visits to pet-friendly cafes or restaurants: More and more establishments allow dogs. It's an excellent way to spend time together in a relaxed environment.

Meetings with other dogs: Organize playdates with friendly dogs who understand your dog's limitations.

Exploring and enjoying plans with dogs is an excellent way to enrich your pet's life and yours. Each season offers unique opportunities to create unforgettable memories. Regardless of whether you choose outdoor adventures or more tranquil activities, the important thing is to spend quality time with your faithful friend.

Dare to try new activities to do with your dog and enjoy all that the world has to offer you together!
