The Origin of the Dachshund Breed

The popularity of the Dachshund has its origin around the 15th century. At this time, German hunters were looking for a dog capable of easily following trails, so they sought a breed with a good sense of smell (the chosen breed was the Deutsche Braken) and crossed it with small dog breeds.

As a result, the Dachshund emerged, capable of locating scents from a great distance and with a nose close to the ground due to the size of its legs. It is for this reason that the Dachshund breed was so popular from the late Middle Ages until today.

Today, they are more prominent as companion pets than as hunters. Their calm nature makes them perfect companions.

What is a Dachshund's Personality Like?

Of course, every Dachshund is unique, however, many of them share the characteristics that define this breed.

• They are a dog with a lot of personality and intelligence, yet they behave very well when at home. They are capable of learning very quickly, and anything you teach them, they will remember forever.
• They are one of the most affectionate breeds that exist. They love for you to play with them, and they will be grateful for every minute you spend by their side.

Dachshund Breed Characteristics by Type

There are many varieties of Dachshund, however, we usually divide them into three main types, which are the following:

• Smooth-haired Dachshund: Their coat is smooth, very close to the body, and very short. It is probably the most popular type of Dachshund.
• Wire-haired Dachshund: The coat is a mix of hair on the inner part of the body and an outer coat. One of the characteristics that makes them most recognizable is the hair on their beard and eyebrows.
• Long-haired Dachshund: Their hair is longer on the lower part of the body, neck, and tail.

These 3 types of Dachshunds share the particular characteristics of this breed. The compact and elongated body, long tail, and short limbs are qualities that all varieties of Dachshund share.

What a Dachshund Owner Should Be Like

These pets are also very demanding of their owners. They prefer sociable people who spend time with them but can also introduce them to other pets during their walks.
