Basic tips on how to train a dachshund

To train a dachshund, you need to understand that they are very stubborn and headstrong, and when they set their mind to something, they won't stop until they get it. Their training is easy and fun, but you need to know some of those peculiarities that we love so much and use them for their training.

To know how to train a dachshund, it's best to try to understand their strengths and weaknesses; each breed has a personality: dachshunds are balanced, loyal, affectionate, playful, calm, a bit stubborn, very home-loving and dependent on their owners and their home... but above all, they are very intelligent, and that's an advantage when it comes to educating them.

There are some factors that we must comply with when training a puppy:

  1. do not use punishment methods
  2. do not yell at them
  3. do not lose patience as each dog will need its own learning time and nothing is learned on the first try

Make your dachshund understand who's in charge

The first and most important thing is to make your dachshund understand that you are in charge, never him. Give him clear and direct rules; don't laugh when you're telling him not to do something. All puppies are very funny, but we must be firm when giving commands and training.

Don't punish him when he doesn't do what you've told him, and reward him with kind words, petting, treats, or toys when he does. The most recommended thing for training your dog is the use of tasty treats, which will generate greater interest on his part.

How to train your dachshund to go potty outside

When the puppy arrives home, it should have an area where it can relieve itself; ideally, use a puppy pad. Try to place it on the pad shortly after eating or sleeping, stay with it until it does something, and reward its action. Always keep its spot clean.

Once it can go outside, try to take it out several times a day, about 10 minutes after eating or sleeping. Walk it, and when it relieves itself, give it a treat. It will associate going outside and relieving itself as something good.

Something very important when it comes to how to train a dog is to teach it not to bite; most will do it while playing, and that's when we'll have to be firmer and stop them with a resounding NO.

Walks with your dog are better with a collar

When it can go outside, after having received all its vaccinations, you will have to socialize it with typical noises: children running and playing, cars, motorcycles, other dogs... This is very important regarding how to train a dachshund, as they tend to be fearful of other dogs. You have to get them used to being with dogs of a similar size or larger from a young age; do it progressively and reward them when they are calm.

Always take him with a dog collar, especially if it's his first walks. With the collar, you'll manage him better and he'll pay more attention to you. He'll quickly learn the commands you ask for and won't pull on the dog leash, making your walks pleasant and enjoyable.

Train your dachshund to avoid dreaded separation anxiety

To prevent him from missing you and destroying the house when you leave, teach him to stay alone and to distract himself with his dog toys. We recommend those that can be filled with wet food or treats: it has been proven that an entertained dog reduces its barking by 90% and alleviates anxiety.

You can take him for a longer walk before going to work, so he arrives tired and thus reduces his energy level.

Dachshunds are very dependent on their owners and have a greater tendency to develop separation anxiety. Educate him from a young age to prevent it, and teach him to stay alone progressively.

We hope we have helped you with the basic rules on how to train your dachshund, but above all, be patient and understanding; we assure you that dachshund training is an incredible experience and, almost certainly, you will never be able to leave the dachshund breed again.

If your dog behaves well, he deserves a reward. How about something from our dog clothing and accessories store?
