How to tell if your dog has a fever

Fever in dogs is a symptom that their body is fighting a virus or disease. Fever in dogs is common, especially during these times of sudden temperature changes.

The first thing to do when we detect possible temperature increases in our dog is to make a quick diagnosis to find out what is causing the fever. The best and most advisable thing to do is to take them to the vet to determine the causes and rule out possible diseases as soon as possible.

A dog's temperature is higher than a human's. A dog's body remains stable at 38.5 - 39.5 degrees Celsius, which is why fever in dogs can easily exceed 42º.

Symptoms of fever in dogs

The symptoms of fever in dogs are similar to those in humans. These signs are unmistakable indications of a fever:

∙ Their eyes are red and watery

∙ They sleep or rest more than usual, inactivity or apathy.

∙ Their nose is very hot and dry

∙ They have tremors and chills

∙ Loss of appetite, vomiting or diarrhea

Any of these symptoms is a very clear reflection of a temperature increase that we should address.

Treatment for dogs with fever

First of all, we should consult a veterinarian immediately; however, there are care measures that can help temporarily reduce their body temperature:

∙ Apply cool compresses to their ears and paws to quickly reduce high temperatures.

∙ Hydrate your dog continuously but with small amounts. Don't let them drink the entire bowl at once. It could make them very sick.

∙ Monitor their temperature with a rectal thermometer.

Never, under any circumstances, give human medication to your dog; their body is not prepared for chemical compounds of this type and they are highly toxic to them.

Just like humans, dogs can get a fever for many reasons; these are the most common:

∙ Infectious processes caused by bacteria, fungi, and viruses

∙ Temperature changes that, especially in small dogs, cause strong contrasts in their body
