5 Spring Dangers for Your Dog
Early spring is a great time to take long walks with your dog. The weather gets better, days get longer, and spending time outdoors becomes more appealing. But beware: spring also brings dangers for your dog.
It's best to know the 5 dangers spring poses for your dog so you can prevent them as much as possible:
- Insects:
First, mosquitoes from the genera Phlebotomus (in Eurasia and Africa) and Lutzomyia (in America) transmit Leishmania, an endemic disease affecting over 70 countries, especially in the Mediterranean basin. There are two types of cases: dogs that are carriers of the disease and those that will develop it. If they develop it, they can suffer from alopecia, particularly around the ears and eyes, to high fever and malnutrition in advanced stages.
You can combat all of this with sprays, pipettes, antiparasitic collars, vaccines, syrups… consult your vet for the best solution for your dog.
Wasps and bees: their sting is very irritating, but the real danger is if our dogs try to hunt them and swallow them, or if they sting them on the head, ears, or snout… the dog will start scratching to relieve the itching, causing more severe wounds with their paws.

- Processionary caterpillars:
One of the greatest dangers for your dog in spring is the processionary caterpillar, a recurring plague year after year. It is during this time, as the weather warms up, that they descend from their nests in pine tree crowns to burrow, form their cocoons, transform into butterflies, and complete their reproductive cycle. Global warming makes them stronger and more frequent in areas where they previously didn't exist.
Their urticating hairs are toxic, and the long lines of caterpillars on the ground are very attractive to dogs. Avoid all contact with them for your dog's health; they can cause anything from respiratory problems to anaphylactic shock and death.
- Foxtails:
When walking in the countryside with your dog, be very careful with dry plant foxtails. Due to their pointed and barbed shape, they get tangled in fur but can also penetrate under the skin, in eyes, nose, mouth, paw pads…
Dogs compulsively scratch themselves, causing severe wounds, and if not taken to a vet for immediate removal, they can lead to infections.
- Toxic plants:
Many plants bloom in spring, but it's not just the flowers that are harmful to your dog… make sure they don't eat any roots, bulbs, or stems, as they might be consuming something toxic.
Azaleas, tulips, cyclamens, daffodils, amaryllis, oleanders, kalanchoes… These are some of the most dangerous plants for your dog. Ingestion can cause arrhythmias, vomiting, diarrhea, liver failure, blood coagulation, a drop in blood pressure, or even death.

- Hairballs:
With spring comes shedding season, when dogs' and cats' hair starts to fall out. Here are some tips to combat shedding in dogs:
- Frequent brushing, a couple of times a week
- A good bath can help remove loose hair from the animal.
- Vitamin supplements to prevent hair loss
- Replace your dog's treats with small pieces of apple or cucumber; being natural and fresh, they are a source of fiber and will keep them hydrated.
Despite everything we've told you, don't be alarmed. You just need to be careful where you walk your dog and pay more attention throughout the entire walk. And always keep them on a leash to prevent them from eating any insects, plants, foxtails, or caterpillars.
