Cities with public transport for dogs: how to travel with a pet

Many cities now offer the possibility of traveling with our pets, which is not only good for pets and owners, but also helps the environment by reducing the need for private vehicle use. In this post, we review some of the cities that already allow dogs on public transport, and the general regulations for other modes of transport.

Cities that allow dogs on public transport

∙ Madrid: A few months ago, Madrid took a significant step towards canine mobility, as it is now possible to travel on the metro with your dog. Guide dogs were already allowed on the metro, but after many years of demands, it has finally been achieved that we can travel with one dog per person, provided they are on a leash and wearing a muzzle. As for buses, small pets are allowed if they are in a carrier.

Many taxis also permit the transport of dogs, either in a carrier or inside the vehicle with appropriate restraint measures.

∙ Barcelona: In 2014, Barcelona established a specific permit for dogs to travel on the metro with their owners. There are restrictions during peak hours, when their presence is not allowed. As in Madrid, dogs must be in a carrier on buses. Barcelona also has taxis authorized for pet transport.

∙ Bilbao: Dogs can travel on the metro if they do not exceed 8 kg. It is up to the Bilbao metro staff to determine if an animal is potentially dangerous or exceeds the maximum weight limit.

Other cities with metro systems are Valencia, Seville, and Palma, none of which allow dogs, except in specific cases such as guide dogs or police dogs.

Other means of transport in Spain

In our country, there are other means of transport where it is permitted to travel with dogs.

The AVE, for example, even on medium and long-distance journeys, allows pets up to 10 kg, although they must be in a carrier with maximum dimensions of 60x35x35 cm.

To travel by plane, you should check with the airline; not all of them allow pets, although there are companies that handle your pet's travel if it cannot travel with you.

At tQel, we support the decision made by cities like Madrid and Barcelona regarding the use of public transport when traveling with our pets, and we hope that, little by little, other cities will follow their example.

We hope this has been helpful for you when it comes to traveling on public transport with your dog.

See you in the next post
