8 foolproof tips to cool your dog down in summer

With these temperatures, we sometimes suffer from intense heat, imagine how your dog must feel… panting all day and drinking lots of water, trying to cool down. If we are not attentive to them, they can suffer from the dreaded heatstroke in dogs. Sometimes we don't know exactly how to cool down a dog, as they don't usually show symptoms of extreme heat, and you don't know if they are at risk or not.

8 foolproof tips to cool down your dog in summer:

We recommend 8 foolproof tips so you know how to cool down your dog and avoid the dreaded heatstroke:

1. Keep your dog hydrated:

One way to cool down your dog in summer is to keep them well hydrated. Place more water bowls around the house, in the kitchen, in the living room, near their bed... so they can hydrate in any room. Keep the containers clean and away from the sun; sometimes, a thirsty mosquito might get in the bowl...

If you're taking a car trip, make sure to bring fresh water and a portable water bowl for walks.

If you see it's very hot, you can put a few ice cubes in their water; you'll see how much fun they have playing with them.

By the way, if you're going to wet your dog, try to do it around their belly and mouth, as they will cool down faster than if you pour water all over them.

2. Do not leave your dog inside your car, much less outdoors:

Never leave your dog locked in a patio or terrace, and under no circumstances in the car… the sun, even on a cloudy day, is very dangerous. If you have to go out to run errands, it's better to leave them alone at home than to get an unpleasant surprise when you return.

3. Make sure they have a shaded spot at home:

Even if it doesn't seem very hot, your dog, regardless of breed, usually struggles at temperatures above 27-28 degrees Celsius (80-82°F). Try to ventilate the house, cooling it down in the mornings by opening windows for about half an hour; this will prevent the temperature from getting too hot during the day.

It's important for your dog to have a place to shelter from the sun.

You can also place one of those gel mats near their bed, so that when they get too hot, they can lie on it and the gel will lower their temperature by a few degrees.

Or, you can use a cooling vest that you wet, which helps your dog cool down: the evaporation of the water from the vest will cool their body.

4. Dogs also eat fruit:

These are some fruits that could help them cool down: apple, melon, pear, and watermelon. Remove the seeds first, as they can be bad for their health. If you give them watermelon, peach, apple, or pear, make sure it's in very small pieces and without the skin.

5. And why not give them an ice cream?

In an ice cream mold or plastic container, place some chopped fruit—you can use melon, watermelon, cherries, apple, pear, banana… then pour in a couple of plain, unsweetened yogurts, put it in the freezer, and you'll have a delicious ice cream for your dog. Combine several flavors and different recipes; the possibilities are endless!!!

Your dog will love it, and it's a great way to reward them and feed them naturally.

6. Plan a pool or beach day for dogs:

Animals don't sweat like humans, so water is a great choice for them to have fun. Take them to a dog pool; in Spain, they are becoming very popular, search for one online. We also recommend taking your pet to the beach or a nearby lake to cool off.

7. Trim and brush their fur:

Summer is a good time to trim your dog's fur and make them cooler, but always leave a layer of fur about 3 cm long, as the fur itself protects them from sunburn. It's advisable to regularly brush your dog to help them shed and remove dead fur that protects them in winter.

It's best to take them to a groomer where they will receive the best care for each season of the year and have their fur cut according to their breed.

8. Avoid physical activity during peak sun hours:

Do not take your dog for a walk from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM; try to do it during cooler times of the day, at dusk or in the evening, as their paws can get burned by the hot pavement. Additionally, if the walk is too intense, your dog could suffer from heatstroke. If you go for a walk during hours when the sun is not strong but it's very hot, always carry fresh water for your best friend.

And if you can't avoid those hours, put our fresQo Cooling Vest on your dog so they can cope with the heat in the best way. The top part, made of Lycra with SPF50+ protection, shields them from the sun; the bottom part, with CoolFresh™ cooling fabric, activates a pleasant cooling sensation upon contact with body heat, promoting natural thermal regulation. You just need to wet it, wring it out, and put it on. When the body heats up, the fabric gently releases accumulated moisture, generating a cooling effect that balances temperature and provides relief. Because when the heat is intense, all your dog needs is comfort. This vest provides everything: freshness, comfort, and freedom, without complications. It features reflective elements for greater visibility at night. The lightweight design of the dog cooling vest reduces the risk of heatstroke by lowering your best friend's body temperature. It is designed to cover the chest area, which is where the best body temperature regulation is achieved. This garment should fit snugly to have a cooling effect. Get yours now and prepare for a quieter, cooler summer without giving up their favorite walks.

We hope these simple tips help you know how to cool down your dog in summer.
