10 tips for being the best dog owner
There's a lot of talk about responsible pet ownership, but how can you be the best dog owner?
If you've decided to get a dog, you'll know that for them to have a full and happy life, they need basic care. Living together will bring you many joyful moments and immense companionship, but there are also a series of responsibilities that you cannot shirk for their well-being, that of your family, and your community.
The commitment and responsible ownership are for their entire life, and, under no circumstances can you abandon them. Now, here are the 10 steps to being the best dog owner:
1- Mutual Respect and Their Own Space
First and foremost: Treat them with respect.
Now, they are another member of your family, so you cannot have them living on a terrace, on the rooftop, or tied up in a patio. They must be inside the house, with their own space, and their basic accessories: their bed, their bowls, their toys, and essential hygiene accessories.
Additionally, they should always have fresh, clean water available.
We mention their own space because each dog is different, and not all of them like to always be by our side. Some are more independent and require a slightly more secluded space to rest and unwind... for example, some houses are very busy with children, and others are quieter, making it easier to rest.

2- Identify Them: Get Them Chipped with Your Information
From the moment you get the dog, take them to the vet for a general check-up to ensure they are in good health. Additionally, you should have them microchipped with your information, in case the animal gets lost (in Spain, it is mandatory for all domestic dogs and cats).
3- Walks: Not Just for Potty Breaks
The bond created between a dog and its owner during walks is essential for their education. Walks are how they discover new smells, other dogs, or simply exercise by playing with a ball. So, establish a schedule with their regular walks.
Through the leash, they will receive basic commands for training; you will teach them not to pull on the leash and to obey whenever you ask.
Since you cannot control everything that happens on the street, it's best to always keep your dog on a leash... this way, you'll prevent them from escaping if they hear a loud noise.

4- Hygiene:
Have you ever heard the saying "a healthy mind in a healthy body"? The same applies to dogs; they need proper hygiene.
A dog, regardless of its coat type, needs minimal periodic hygiene care: a good bath, nail trimming, ear check-up and cleaning (they have many folds that can harbor dirt), brushing to remove dead hair...
Get a quality shampoo so their baths are more pleasant and less stressful.
5- Spay or Neuter Your Pet:
Currently, many dogs live on the street. Therefore, to avoid unwanted litters, it's best to spay or neuter your pet, and if you want another dog, choose to adopt one of those who don't have a home. Contact a local shelter.
Sterilization prevents diseases like infections or tumors that could develop in the future; if you spay or neuter your pet, you eliminate these risks.
6- Always Pick Up Your Dog's Poop:
Surely you've stepped in dog "gifts" while walking down the street. To prevent this, always pick up your dog's droppings.
Carry poop bags, or buy one of the curious gadgets available on the market: scoops, collecting boxes, plastic tongs...
7- Visit the Vet Periodically:
Even if your dog isn't ill, it's always good to visit the vet a couple of times a year to check their general health.
It is convenient and recommended to keep their vaccination records up to date.
If you see that your dog is listless or sad, or not playing as much as before, go to the vet.

8- Protect Them from Possible Accidents:
What you just read is obvious, but if it's your first time owning a dog, adapt your home so they don't eat anything that could be harmful to them, especially if they are a puppy. Check all cables, outlets, valuables that may be within their reach and that you don't want to be destroyed by a bunch of furious little teeth... for this, always have a supply of toys of different textures, and if they squeak, make sure it's a soft squeak, if possible.
9- Educate Them:
To be the best responsible dog owner, you have to educate them so they can live in society. A well-behaved dog is often allowed into many shops and businesses.
Furthermore, dedicating some of your time to playing with them will make them happier; they will feel comfortable and will want to be with you whenever possible. Pet them, teach them things, show them their toys so they don't bite things you have around the house.
If you like meditation, you can learn to meditate together. A good experience that will undoubtedly enrich both of you, plus dogs are great meditators, as they always live in the moment, and that's exactly what meditation is about.
10- Quality Food:
Nowadays, you can find a wide variety of dry and natural packaged foods on the market. Consult your vet about which one best suits your pet's needs, by age and lifestyle; a puppy is not the same as an adult dog. Regardless, try to ensure it is high in protein and low in fat.
Don't forget the delicious treats, which delight your dog and can be found in all sizes, textures, and flavors... they'll go crazy with joy!
They will serve both for teaching obedience and training tricks, and for a little treat between meals.
Online you will find tons of easy homemade recipes to make your dog happy.
